Lake Como is not Tuscany's Maremma, but it has two riding areas that surprise everyone: the Pian di Spagna nature reserve at the northern tip, between Colico and the Lago di Mezzola, where trails run between the lake, the river Adda and reed beds full of herons — and the Val d'Intelvi, between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, with panoramic ridge paths. Rides are always accompanied by an equestrian guide, on calm horses used to beginners. One-hour rides start at around €35 per person. You pay the stables directly on the day; we book the guide and the time slot for you on WhatsApp.

How it works
Tell us your date, how many riders, and everyone's experience level — 'never been on a horse' is the most common answer, and it's fine. Before setting off you spend a few minutes in the arena to learn the basics: how to hold the reins, stop, and turn. Then you head out on the trail behind the guide. In summer, when water levels allow, the horses walk into the shallow water of the lake or the Adda — the moment everyone remembers. You pay the stables directly on the day.
What's included — and what to bring
The price includes the horse, the riding helmet, the accompanying guide and insurance. Wear long trousers and closed shoes (trekking shoes or trainers) — no shorts or sandals. Minimum age: around 4 for pony rides, 6–8 for regular rides depending on the stables. Maximum weight is generally 90–100 kg. Rides run all year, including winter — riding on snow at Pian di Spagna is a classic for locals.
Who it's worth it for — and who should skip it
Worth it for couples, families with children, and anyone who wants a slow half-day in nature away from the boat crowds. The Pian di Spagna at sunset, with the mountains turning pink, is genuinely beautiful. Skip it only if you have serious back problems or a strong allergy to horsehair — or if you're looking for fast galloping: tourist rides go at a walk, for everyone's safety.
