Kayak & SUP on Lake Como

The quietest way to see the lake — paddle past villas, into coves, at your own speed.

From a ferry, Lake Como is scenery. From a kayak or paddleboard, it's a place you're actually in — gliding into coves no road reaches, swimming off your board, hearing the lake instead of an engine. Options run from simple hourly rentals (from €30) to guided 2-3 hour tours past the villas (up to €98), all launchable from beaches around Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Lenno. No experience needed for the guided tours. Message us on WhatsApp with your base and fitness level; we book you with vetted local guides and you pay on the day.

How it works

  • Message us your date, base town and whether you want a rental or a guided tour.
  • We confirm a launch beach and time — morning slots recommended.
  • Guided tours include equipment, a safety briefing and a local guide; rentals include board or kayak, paddle and life jacket.
  • You pay the operator directly at the beach. No prepayment.

What's included

  • Kayak (single or double) or stand-up paddleboard, paddle, life jacket
  • Dry bag for phone and keys on most tours
  • Local guide on guided tours — route, villa stories, swim stops
  • Basic instruction: first-timers are the norm, not the exception

Bring: swimwear, sunscreen, water, and a strap for sunglasses. Wetsuits appear in spring and autumn when the water demands them.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

Great for active couples, families with teenagers, and anyone who finds sightseeing boats too passive. A 2-hour guided tour is a genuine highlight of a lake trip, not a filler activity.

Skip it if you can't swim (non-negotiable for safety), if your group includes small children, or if you're visiting in November–March — the season runs roughly April to October, and even May water is brisk.

Honest tips

  • Go before 10am. The lake is glass-flat in the morning; by early afternoon, ferry wash and thermal wind make paddling work.
  • SUP looks easier than it is — beginners fall in, and that's fine, but kayaking is the more forgiving choice.
  • The Pescallo–Bellagio loop and the Lenno–Balbianello stretch are the classic routes for a reason.
  • You will see the villas better from a kayak than from the road. Villa Balbianello from the water is the view the postcards copy.
  • September is the secret best month: warm water, thin crowds.

Frequently asked questions

How much does kayaking or SUP cost on Lake Como?

Hourly self-guided rentals run €30–40 per person. Guided tours cost €55–75 for about two hours and €80–98 for three hours with a swim stop. Guided prices include all equipment, instruction and the guide — no hidden extras at the beach.

Do I need experience to join a guided tour?

No. Guided tours are designed for first-timers: the guide teaches paddling basics at the beach, sets a relaxed pace, and stays within calm inshore water. What you do need is the ability to swim — it's the one non-negotiable safety requirement.

Where are the launch points?

The main bases are around Bellagio (Pescallo bay), Varenna, Menaggio and Lenno near Villa Balbianello. Which one suits you depends on where you stay and the route you want — tell us your base on WhatsApp and we'll book the closest good option.

Kayak or SUP — which should I choose?

Kayak if you want an easy, dry-ish, stable ride and to cover more distance. SUP if you want the better workout, the better swimming platform, and the better Instagram angle — with a realistic chance of falling in. Both work for beginners; kayaks are simply more forgiving.

When is the season?

Roughly April to October, with the sweet spots in May, June and September. Morning conditions are dramatically calmer than afternoons year-round. In July and August, book at least a couple of days ahead — the good morning slots go first.
