Things to Do in Tremezzo, Lake Como

The garden shore — Villa Carlotta's azaleas, and the short hop to the most famous villa on the lake.

Tremezzo, on the western shore of the mid-lake, is garden country. This is the home of Villa Carlotta, whose botanical gardens explode with azaleas every spring, and the gateway to Villa del Balbianello — the most photographed villa on Lake Como, sitting on its own wooded point at Lenno, part of the same Tremezzina area. Bellagio stares back from across the water, and ferries keep the crossing easy. Tremezzo is quieter than the famous three towns and perfect for a slower day. Here is what to see and book.

What to see and do in Tremezzo

  • Villa Carlotta — the headline sight: a neoclassical villa with an art collection and, above all, botanical gardens famous for the spring azalea and rhododendron bloom. Allow two hours, more in April–May.
  • Villa del Balbianello — technically in Lenno, within the Tremezzina. Reach it with a 20-minute walk from Lenno's center or directly by boat. The loggia views are the most famous on the lake.
  • The Tremezzo lakefront — a calm, elegant promenade facing Bellagio, with grand-hotel architecture and far fewer crowds than the opposite shore.
  • Lenno's bay and lido — a sheltered curve of shoreline good for a swim and a slow lunch by the water.
  • Greenway del Lago — a signposted walking route linking the Tremezzina villages through gardens, churches and old hamlets.

Getting there and getting around

Tremezzo has its own ferry stop with passenger services to Bellagio and along the lake, and car ferries run from nearby Cadenabbia to Bellagio and Varenna. Buses connect the Tremezzina to Como in about an hour. A ferry day pass, roughly €15–30, covers a day of hopping; the full season is April to October. For Balbianello, decide in advance: the 20-minute uphill walk from Lenno or a boat arrival — the boat drops you at the villa's own landing and saves the climb.

What to book through us

Tremezzo is the natural departure point for the lake's signature boat route: a private boat tour to Villa del Balbianello and Isola Comacina, arriving at the villas from the water as their owners intended. We work with vetted local captains, confirm everything on WhatsApp, and you pay the captain directly on the day. No prepayment, no middleman fees.

Honest advice from a local

Come in late April or May if you can — the Villa Carlotta azaleas are genuinely worth timing a trip around, and the gardens are far less packed than in July. Balbianello sells out on peak days, so book entrance tickets ahead; arriving by boat also skips the steepest part of the walk. Tremezzo itself stays calm even in high season, which is exactly why we like it. Pair the gardens in the morning with an afternoon boat tour and you have one of the strongest days on the lake.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Villa del Balbianello from Tremezzo?

Balbianello is at Lenno, in the Tremezzina. You can walk about 20 minutes uphill from Lenno's center, or arrive directly at the villa's landing by boat — the easier and more scenic option.

When do the azaleas bloom at Villa Carlotta?

Typically from mid-April to mid-May, with rhododendrons following. It is the peak time to visit the gardens, so expect company and buy tickets ahead.

Is Tremezzo a good base on Lake Como?

Yes, if you want a quiet, elegant base with big views of Bellagio and fast access to both famous gardens. It is less lively in the evening than Menaggio or Bellagio.

Can I visit Balbianello without a tour?

Yes — the villa and gardens are open to individual visitors most days, but entrance slots sell out in high season. Book entrance tickets in advance and consider arriving by boat to skip the uphill walk.

When should I visit Tremezzo?

April to October for full ferry service. Late April and May are peak season for the gardens; September is the sweet spot for warm weather and thinner crowds.
