Be honest with yourself on the Vespa: if you've never ridden a scooter, the lakeside road between Bellagio and Como in August is not the classroom. Take the e-bike tour instead — same views, less adrenaline, zero clutch. Neither option suits small children.

- The eastern shore (Varenna–Bellano) is quieter than the western shore for both bikes and scooters.
- Start early. By 11am in summer, the lake road belongs to buses and delivery vans.
- A 125cc Vespa handles the hills fine with one rider; with two, expect slow climbs — still fun, just slower.
- E-bike tours in May, June and September have cooler air and emptier roads.
